Letter from Rep. Lance Russell to prospective legislators

If you’re a member of the GOP in South Dakota, you owe it to yourself to read this letter from District 30 State Representative Lance Russell (R).

Apparently there is an active, ongoing campaign by some CURRENT MEMBERS of the legislature to exclude duly elected GOP office-holders such as Rep. Lance Russell from membership in the GOP caucus during the upcoming 2013 legislative session in Pierre .

Here is an excerpt from that letter:
—————————————————————
“Not only are calls are being made to survey potential exclusion or inclusion of Legislators to certain meetings, but regular communications and notices are not being sent to certain Legislators as well.”

“I have been completely excluded from receiving any e-mails sent among Republican members, including the one that apparently announced the date of caucus elections for the 2013-14 sessions.”
—————————————————————-

Is THIS what the GOP leadership in Pierre means when they talk about having a “big-tent” party ?

Apparently they welcome a “Republican” party where Pro-Abortion, Anti-gun, and Pro-Tax Increase members are welcomed, while social and fiscal conservatives are marginalized and excluded from membership.

To simply label this kind of conduct by members of the legislature an “outrage” would be one of biggest understatements ever uttered.

Rest assured that we will contacting Representative Russell to find out which current House members have been conducting this covert campaign to exclude him (and presumably other conservatives as well) from the House GOP caucus in upcoming legislative session.

Until that time, we recommend that you call and/or e-mail Speaker Pro-Tem Rep. Brian Gosch and demand that he put a STOP to these reprehensible phone calls and exclusionary tactics and force the legislators involved in this scheme to publicly apologize for their actions.

By refusing to put a stop to either of these things, Gosch is either tacitly endorsing these despicable actions, or he is showing Republicans across the state that he is UN-FIT to be the future Speaker of the House.

You can find Gosch’s contact information by clicking here.

** Veteran’s Issues Scorecard now available. **

With election day less than a week away, we felt it was important for South Dakota voters to be able to evaluate their legislators based on how well they represent and uphold Republican values as expressed in the 2012 South Dakota GOP Platform.

One of the Republican values we hold dear is doing our best to support our military veterans including our National Guard members.

We are pleased to announce that by popular request from our faithful viewers and GOP Platform supporters, we now have a Veteran’s Issues Accountability Scorecard available available for download.

The RINO back-stabbing continues…..

As many of you are aware, a postcard was mailed out yesterday to the voters of District 12 which included endorsements of a liberal, pro-abortion, pro-tax Democrat by half a dozen individual identified on the postcard as “Republicans”.  The fact that there are two incumbent Republican legislators running for re-election who are arguably more conservative than this Democrat candidate seems to be of little concern to them.

But while voter registrations may actually list these Democrat-endorsers as Republicans, past voting records against Pro-2nd amendment and Pro-Life legislation, as well as their work on behalf of organizations like the pro-abortion group NARAL and “Equality South Dakota” are enough to cause most grass-roots Republicans to question the legitimacy of their “Republican” claims.

Sadly, this is not the first time that conservative candidates have come under attack from fellow Republicans.  As you may recall, the governor made several ill-fated endorsements in the Republican primaries and promptly saw 3 out of the 5 less-than-conservative candidates he endorsed go down to defeat. In fact, two of the legislators he endorsed had verifiable records of voting against Pro-Life legislation and advocating for special legal treatment for “alternative lifestyles”.

The governor also used the bully pulpit of his campaign e-mail account to call for investigations by Attorney General Jackley into calls placed by veterans who dared call attention to the less-than-stellar voting records of some top GOP leaders on veteran’s issues.

Given the history of attacks on conservative candidates during the current election cycle, we are posing several questions that deserve an immediate answer:

# 1 – Did the Governor, SD GOP Chairman Tim Rave, or executive director Tony Post have advance knowledge of this postcard prior to it being mailed ?  If so, why did they not bother to lift a single finger to stop it from being sent ?  How deep is their involvement in this war against conservative Republicans ?

# 2 – Did the Governor, Chairman Rave, or any other high-ranking members of the state GOP contribute money to help finance the design, printing, and distribution of this revolting RINO campaign mailer ?

# 3 – Will the Governor denounce this postcard in the same manner in which he denounced the person (or persons) responsible for publicizing the voting records of members of the Republican leadership ?

Or will he continue on with his disgusting double-standard of supporting only the most liberal and “progressive” members of the Republican Party while vilifying and chastising the more conservative members of his party who are calling for a return to the Republican values expressed in the SDGOP Party Platform ?

New Scorecard Updates Available

As noted in an earlier post, we received a number of requests for a more detailed version of the scorecard that contained Democrat votes on the same group of bills.

In  response to that request, we have added the scores of several Democrat legislators to the scorecards so that Republican voters can not only see how their local legislators voted compared to other GOP legislators, but also how they voted in comparison to some of the Democrat legislators as well. We hope this updated scorecard for the S.D. House is useful for that purpose.

An update version of the scorecard for the S.D. Senate is now available as well.

Vote In Our Issue-Specific Scorecard Poll !

Updated Scorecard

Several folks have been asking us for an updated version of the scorecard that contains Democrat votes on the same group of bills.

As a  response to that request, we have added the scores of several Democrat legislators to the scorecard as well, so that GOP voters can see not only how their local legislators compare to other GOP legislators, but how they voted compared to some of the Democrat legislators as well. We hope this updated scorecard for the S.D. House is useful for that purpose. A similar version for the S.D. Senate will be available shortly and we encourage you to check this site for that later today.

—> UPDATE:  updated scorecard for S.D. Senate now available

We would also like to point out that many of the planks in the GOP platform are consistent with principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution.

In view of that fact, we offer our thanks to legislators from BOTH PARTIES who cast votes in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence. These rights include the right to life and liberty, the right to be secure in our persons and property, and the right to free expression and self defense.

Scorecard Commentary in the S.D. Political Blogosphere

We would like to recognize the following bloggers for their coverage of the SDGOP Platform Accountability Scorecard:

Bob Ellis at the American Clarion

Cory Heidelberger at Madville Times

Obviously, most of you are aware that the authors of these two blogs represent two different political points of view. However, they both deserve credit for giving voters the chance to view the scorecard and decide whether the votes of their representatives in Pierre are consistent with their campaign rhetoric.

Whether you consider yourself a conservative, moderate, or liberal Republican (or Independent or Democrat for that matter), you deserve the opportunity to see the votes of your representatives side-by-side with other members of the legislature.

The bills represented on this scorecard comprise over 10% of the total number of bills submitted during the 2012 session. By any objective measure, that is a statistically significant number of bills.

We did our best to ensure that each bill on the scorecard had at least one or more tie-ins to the S.D. Republican Party Platform. Is it possible there be disagreements over the inclusion of some bills on the scorecard ? Obviously, that will be the case. If so, it is a relatively simple matter for an informed voter to omit any bill they disagree with and re-calculate their representative’s score.

However, we feel this scorecard will function as a good starting point for discussion about the SD GOP platform. When it comes right down to it, that platform is a statement of Republican principles as expressed by the grassroots of the Republican party in our state. To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no planks of the S.D. GOP Party Platform in conflict with the national GOP Platform.

We feel that an open discussion of Republican principles and how the votes of our representatives align with those principles is an important thing.  Perhaps Republican voters in some districts will be satisfied with a representative who votes 40% or 50% of the time with the Republican Platform. But it is equally possible that Republican voters in other districts will prefer a representative scoring 80% or higher .

Regardless of what they decide, certainly we can agree that they ought to be able to have access to a side-by-side comparison that helps them make an informed choice.  Ultimately, it will be up to the person viewing the scorecard to decide which votes on the scorecard are most important to them this November.
